Early Bird
Since I have a few minutes to kill…
Yesterday I finally met up with my mentee (for a mentorship program I’m doing) and it was interesting. I was pretty fascinated by the fact that he and I are pretty much identical as far as artistic/academic goals and ambitions.
I just think it’s really cool to see different people on the same path that I’m on, but seeing them at different stages. It’s inspiring and enlightening.
Right Now
I’m about to start school again for the semester. I’ve been very desperate about getting back into visual art stuff because, I didn’t take any art classes last semester. Now I’m like starving for art. I think I needed the break though. I needed to get away and get inspired, and now I’m ready to jump back into it. I just really wish art school (or school in general- in the financial sense) didn’t have to be so complicated. I mean, obvious getting a degree in Design/Illustration will be very useful for me, but sometimes I wish I could just drop everything and just do art and do it well, and make a career out of it. I mean, I know stuff like that takes a long time and a lot of real art development takes real life experience, but sometimes I just feel so sick of having to follow guidelines and regulations. I just want to be able to make art and be happy. I don’t even care that much about making a mark on the world, there’s better people for that, but I’ll be happy as long as I can make art.
Anywho, I’m trying to experiment more with typography so here’s a piece I’ve been toying with. Click the image to see the full size image on deviantart.com
Habits
So, not keeping promises is something I’m really good at. It’s primarily the reason why I don’t make promises, because I know I can never keep them. And I always found it amusing when I would do something stupid growing up that my parents would disaprove of and my mom would say “Remember, you promised you wouldn’t do that?” and I would generally respond with a “I never promised anything.” and then of course that would result in me getting punished anyway.
But that’s not the point of this entry. The point is that I’m so bad at keeping stuff updated, like this blog. I can barely keep my private blog up to date. Well, not really that’s like the only thing I actually update regularly. But I want to do the same with this too. So I need to remind myself that I want to give a lot of importance to this blog.
What I’m doing right now is that I want to put as much focus as possible on my art work. I need to get started on solidifying my portfolio for when I transfer. I already have an idea for the theme I’m going for but I really need to expand my ideas as far as mediums to use. This is mostly because I want to have a nice variety of mediums for the portfolio. I already ideas for 3D (sculpture-type) pieces, and I want to try to include some written pieces. Anyway, as soon as I have some solid ideas I’ll try to share them.
I made more of the Big Bang caricatures. I’ll be putting those up soon. I don’t know if I’ll get around to coloring them like I wanted anytime soon. But I have ideas for digital coloring that are different from my original coloring plan. So I’ll see how that goes.
And that’s all I can remember right now.
And as soon and I get my lens back from being fixed, I’ll be posting lots of new photography.
things
So, I busted my camera lens today at school. Just my luck, when I finally decide to take my camera to school with me so that I can motivate myself to take pictures more frequently I bump into a banister hard enough to goof up the lens. Now I have to take it in to get replaced. I’m so grateful that the warranty has yet to expire. Now I’m afraid to take my camera anywhere which SUCKS because I LOVE taking my camera with me everywhere. Temporarily I will have to make due with the camera on my phone, which actually isn’t all that bad. After all, it doesn’t matter what kind of camera you have to take pictures. You can always get good results with any medium or quality of material as long as you learn how to use them beneficially. Here’s a couple pics I took today + a shot of my phone I took last night.

Procrastinating
Supposed to be doing homework. Watching old episodes of Family Outing instead. Also, current favorite book: my Korean/English Dictionary.
NOTE: Look closely at all the random crap I have on my desk: dental card, SAIC business card, the post-its on my monitor, and the one on my wall that says “wall” in Korean! hahaha!
Doing Homework
Self portrait!
Just finished this piece today, for my drawing class. I may add more to it later, but this was the submission for the grade.
Click to enlarge. I took the pictures with my phone because my real camera has no battery charger at the moment. So yeah, sorry for the blurriness. Also, that’s supposed to be an optic mouse as my right hand…but it looks like a hoof.
Now I have to start working on my final piece… which is most likely going to revolve around Spock as suggested by my professor and in light of the new Star Trek film… so…yeah.
Pon Farr or GTFO
So for my drawing class where doing an assignment where you copy an image identically by using a grid. Personally I think this exercise is pointless because it’s like what you have someone do just to make them feel like they have some amount of artistic talent. But it’s just another skill. I mean, I think ANYONE can get pretty sweet results using this technique, but when you’re an art student and being able to copy an image exactly means you don’t need a grid, the idea of this completely defeats the purpose of the effort. I mean, it’s certainly time consuming and tedious… but I dunno, it’s a bit shit, I think. Not to insult my professor or anyone in my class, but I dunno… I’m taking advantage of it though…
So enough moaning about it, I only brought it up to say that the image I’m using is a pretty bad ass image of Mr. Spock, from Star Trek, because I am a nerd and am madly in love with the young Leonard Nimoy.
So I’m going to be replicating that image (on the left) as a 18″ x 24″ drawing (so far it’s turning out pretty sweet, but that’s expected considering the method at hand) that will be colored later this week in colored pencil. I decided against doing the background, because I’m going to draw in some text around him that’s going to say “Pon Farr or GTFO.” So I’m quite excited about that part, because I’m immature and easily amused (and a giant nerd for knowing what “Pon Farr” means). I’m definitely going to mat the image at some point and it’s going to be a major portfolio piece of mine haha. Just because Spock is so Bad ass.
One more thing! I signed up for beta testing for a new game platform that supposed to be released in the winter. It’s called Onlive. My brother was telling me about it and I’m pretty psyched. So I signed up for beta testing. I’m not a gamer, but I think this would be a cool thing to approach as a n00b to gaming, Since I don’t have a specific preference when it comes to video games because I suck at every single one I’ve ever played (Yes, even the original Mario on NES). So yeah. I’m excited about that.
So that’s all I really have to say. Now I have to write my paper on Surrealism, FO REALZ NOW.
- Good Day!
